What citation style is recommended by Karin Knisely?

In her book "A Student Handbook for Writing in Biology," Karin Knisely provides students with a lot of practical advice on how to write according to the conventions in biology. For citing references, she recommends using the CSE style.

The Council of Science Editors (CSE) is a US-based nonprofit organization that supports editorial practice among scientific writers. The CSE publishes a style guide for scientific papers: The CSE Manual. The CSE style has three systems to cite sources:

  • Name-Year (N-Y) system: Author name and year of the publication are placed in parentheses in the text (e.g. Rode 2012). The reference list is ordered alphabetically by author name.
  • Citation-Name (C-N) system: Superscript numbers are used to identify in-text citations. In the alphabetized reference list, each numeral corresponds with a unique reference.
  • Citation-Sequence (C-S) system: Superscript numbers are used to identify in-text citations. In the reference list, sources are numbered sequentially by the order in which they appear in the text (the difference to the C-N system is that they might not be in alphabetical order by author).

Knisely also points out that the Name-Year system has the advantage that people working in the field will know the literature and, upon seeing the authors' names, will understand the reference without having to check the reference list. This is why the Name-Year system is generally preferred when creating your references according to Knisely's recommendations.

But at the end of the day, which one of these three systems to use depends on the requirements of your institution. Be sure to clarify this before you start your paper. Regardless of which system your institution requires, BibGuru will help you get the fastest and most accurate citations for the Knisely/CSE style with our Knisely citation generator.
